The Gipsy Encampment by Gianni Cortese

Quick Overview

This is one of the largest and most important pieces in the Capodimonte range, it was first issued in the 1960’s in Monza near Milan and it caused a sensation. Never before was so much detail and variety seen in a piece of Capo-di-monte. The subject of the way of life of the gypsies had never been touched upon, previously large pieces were based on religious themes or aristocratic coaches, but here was a celebration of a group of people who had very little but enjoyed life and music and dancing while living off the land and always on the move.

It is one of the finest pieces ever sculpted by the artist Gianni Cortese.
